Dawn of the Dead is a 2004 American action horror film directed by Zack Snyder (in his feature film directorial debut), produced by Richard P. Rubinstein, Marc Abraham and by Eric Newman and the screenplay written by James Gunn while the special effects for the film were done by Heather Langenkamp and David LeRoy Anderson, who co-own AFX Studio.It is a remake of George A. Romero's 1978 film and stars Sarah Polley, Ving Rhames, Jake Weber, and Mekhi Phifer.A handful of human survivors living in a shopping mall located in the fictional town of Everett, Wisconsin, are surrounded by swarms of zombies. Ty Burrell, Michael Kelly, Kevin Zegers, and Lindy Booth play supporting roles; the original's cast members Ken Foree, Scott Reiniger, and Tom Savini appear in cameos. The film was released by Universal Pictures on March 19, 2004, and grossed $102 million worldwide against a budget of $26 million.

Plot

After finishing a long shift as a nurse at the Milwaukee County Hospital, Ana returns to her suburban neighborhood and her husband Louis. Caught up in a date night, they miss an emergency news bulletin. The next morning, a girl from the neighborhood enters and kills Louis, who immediately reanimates as a zombie and attacks Ana. She flees in her car, crashes, and passes out. Upon waking, she joins police sergeant Kenneth Hall, electronics salesman Michael, petty criminal Andre and his pregnant wife, Luda. They break into a nearby mall and are attacked by a zombie security guard, who scratches Luda. Three guards — C.J., Bart, and Terry — make them surrender their weapons in exchange for refuge. They split into groups to secure the mall. On the roof, they see another survivor, Andy, who is stranded in his gun store across the zombie-infested parking lot.
The next day, a delivery truck carrying more survivors enters the lot, pursued by zombies. They include Norma, Steve, Tucker, Monica, Glen, Frank and his daughter, Nicole. Another woman is too ill to walk; she is wheeled inside, only to die and reanimate. After she is killed, the group determines the disease is passed by bites. Luda keeps her scratch a secret from the group, though Andre knows. Frank, who has been bitten, elects to be isolated. When he reanimates, Kenneth shoots him.

Kenneth and Andy start a friendship by way of messages written on a whiteboard; romance buds between Ana and Michael, and Nicole and Terry. When the power goes out, a few of the survivors go to the parking garage to activate the emergency generator and find a friendly dog who is adopted by Nicole and named Chips. Zombies kill Bart, forcing the others to douse the zombies in gas and set them ablaze. Meanwhile, Luda — tied up by Andre — gives birth and dies. She reanimates and Norma kills Luda. This makes Andre snap; he exchanges gunfire with Norma and the two kill each other. The others find a zombie baby, which they kill reluctantly. The group decides to fight their way to the marina and travel on Steve's yacht to an island on Lake Michigan. They reinforce two shuttle buses from the garage for it; welding on a snowplow, attaching metal bars and chains as well as stocking chainsaws, propane tanks and road flares.
To rescue Andy, the group straps supplies onto the dog, Chips, and lower him into the parking lot; the zombies have no interest in him. Chips enters Andy's store safely, but a zombie follows and bites Andy. Nicole crashes the delivery truck into the gun store, where she is trapped by a zombified Andy. A group of them reach the gun store via the sewers, kill Andy, and rescue Nicole. They grab ammunition and go back to the mall; along the way, Tucker breaks his legs, and C.J. shoots him out of mercy. Once inside, they are unable to lock the door because Steve temporarily abandoned his guard duty. Zombies storm the mall, forcing an evacuation via the buses.

While navigating the city, Glen loses control of a chainsaw, accidentally killing himself and Monica. In the chaos, their bus crashes. Steve tries to flee on his own but is ambushed by a zombie. Ana kills the zombified Steve and retrieves his boat keys. At the marina, C.J. sacrifices himself so the others can escape. Michael, after revealing a bite wound, kills himself as Ana, Kenneth, Nicole, Terry, and Chips flee on the yacht. Footage from a camcorder found on the boat shows the group runs out of supplies, arrives at an island and is attacked by a swarm of zombies. The camcorder drops and is later grabbed by a zombie, leaving their fate unknown.

Plot


The film opens with the capture of an apparently innocent girl in the woods, who is taken to a cabin with cult members. Her father immolates her, as it is revealed she is not human but actually a demon.
David and his girlfriend Natalie arrive at a cabin in the woods, where they meet with his younger sister Mia and his friends Eric and Olivia. The group plans to stay in the cabin while Mia overcomes her addiction to heroin. The cabin's cellar - the same one in which the first girl was immolated - is littered with rotting animal corpses, a shotgun, and a book called the Naturom Demonto.
Eric, despite written warnings, reads aloud an incantation and awakens a malevolent force. Mia begins seeing a bloody girl in the woods, and begs the group to leave. They refuse, believing that she is experiencing withdrawal. Mia tries to flee herself is stuck in possessed vines that hold her in place around the neck, legs, and arms. Then sees an Abomination version of herself. A vine comes out of her mouth and rapes Mia, successfully possessing her.
David finds his murdered dog along with a bloodied hammer, and goes to confront Mia, who is in the shower. He sees her scalding herself in the water and tries to drive her to a hospital but heavy rains flood the road. That night, the possessed Mia shoots David in the arm and warns that they will all die. David locks her in the cellar but not before she projectile-vomits all over Olivia. Olivia becomes possessed and stabs Eric in the chest; he bludgeons her to death. David nurses Eric's wounds as Eric explains that when he read the book, it must've released "something evil". Mia lures Natalie into the cellar, where she bites her hand. Natalie tries to attack Mia with a box cutter but Mia uses the blade to split her own tongue in half before planting a bloodied kiss on Natalie's mouth. David opens the trapdoor, allowing Natalie to escape. The demon tells him that Mia no longer exists.

Eric explains that according to the Naturom Demonto, the Taker of Souls must claim five souls in order to unleash the Abomination. Natalie becomes convinced that her arm is infected and amputates it with an electric knife. David patches up her wounded arm while Eric explains that Mia must be "purified" either by live burial, bodily dismemberment, or burning. The possessed Natalie attacks the pair with a nail gun but David shoots her. Natalie turns back to normal but bleeds to death in David's arms.

David incinerates Olivia’s corpse, dismembers Natalie’s body, and plans to burn down the cabin with Mia in it. However, as Mia starts singing a song from their childhood, he has a change of heart and decides to bury her instead. He digs a grave and tries to subdue Mia, who attempts to drown him. Eric intervenes but not before being fatally stabbed and dying. David sedates and buries Mia as she taunts him. He then unearths and defibrillates her, begging her to return to him. The demon is exorcized and Mia is healed as the siblings reconcile. David enters the cabin to retrieve the car keys but a possessed Eric stabs him with barb wire cutters. As Mia tries to help him, David locks her out to protect her and shoots a gasoline can, destroying Eric's body and sacrificing himself.

As Mia watches the cabin burn, blood rains from the sky. Since five souls have been claimed, the Abomination rises, going after Mia. Mia attempts to flee in the car but fails. She instead crawls into the shed through a hole and grabs a chainsaw to fight back. When the Abomination throws the car at Mia, she gets her hand crushed underneath. She tears off her hand and halves the Abomination with the chainsaw. Its corpse sinks into the ground and the blood-rain stops. Mia stumbles away into the woods. Unknown to her, the Naturom Demonto is still intact.

In a post-credits scene, a silhouetted Ash Williams says "Groovy" and looks at the camera before it cuts to black.
